PE and Games
Through the teaching of Physical Education we aim to develop the physical potential of each child while fostering important social skills such as confidence, leadership and self esteem.
All children (Reception – Year 8) follow a set Physical Education curriculum. In the Lower School (Reception – Year 2) children learn and improve basic fundamental motor skills through fun games and gymnastics. These skills are later applied by the children in more structured game situations.
In the Upper School (Years 3 – 8) the curriculum incorporates gymnastics, hockey, netball, football, basketball, cricket, tennis, tag rugby, athletics and rounders. In addition, children in Years 6, 7 and 8 are introduced to a short course of basic anatomy and physiology. This is taught through a fitness-based unit and includes both theoretical and practical components.
Together with the general curriculum, the department also offers a variety of extra-curricular club activities: netball, football, cricket, rounders, hockey, tennis, basketball, gymnastics, fitness, and cross country throughout the year. Extension clubs are offered to children who display particular strengths in our main sports. Through these extension squads children are offered extra coaching to further extend and develop skills and game knowledge.
Fixtures are arranged with other prep schools and are an integral component of the school calendar. Our inclusive policy regarding competitive sport at Newton means that all children will have the opportunity to represent the school and gain the benefits of healthy, well managed competition. Matches are organised for netball, football, cricket, rounders, hockey and cross country teams. The gymnastics squad also performs in a large annual gymnastics display.
From Year 2 and through the house system, we run inter-house football, hockey, netball, rounders and cricket competitions. All children are selected in teams and represent their houses in all inter-house competitions.
Our annual Upper School Sports Day is held at the Battersea Park Arena. All children compete and can enter both friendly and competitive events. The Lower School Sports Day is held on site on our all weather pitch where activities are modified to cater for their experience.
Our facilities include a 70m x 40m all weather floodlit Astroturf pitch, two cricket nets, and two sprung wooden floored gymnasiums; one with bespoke wall bars and a range of child specific gymnastic equipment, the other equipped for indoor team sports.
