Maths

In a school named after the greatest English mathematician, Sir Isaac Newton (Professor of Mathematics, Cambridge University, 1669), mathematics is a key subject. The value of the subject in everyday life is without question. Mathematics is not so much a body of knowledge as a special kind of language.

In Newton Prep the children are set into classes of similar standards for mathematics from Year 1 (aged 5/6) upwards. Mathematics is taught everyday to every class.

Year 3        8 lessons per week
Year 4        8 lessons per week
Year 5        6 lessons per week
Year 6        6 lessons per week
Year 7        6 lessons per week
Year 8        5 lessons per week

Each lesson is 40 minutes. The children have specialist teachers from Year 4.

The philosophy of teaching mathematics at Newton Prep is based not only on the firm foundations of numeracy, mental and applied mathematics.  The teaching of mathematics at Newton Prep also encourages pupils to think laterally and to make connections with the wider world of science – it was an understanding of Newton’s Law of Gravitational Force that enabled man to walk on the moon.

At Newton we prepare children for 11+ and 13+ examinations for entry into some of the best schools in the country. To help in achieving this, the children undertake a variety of assessments.
Mental tests – weekly tests
Topic tests – on completion of a topic
Exams – as part of Exam week ( Autumn and Summer only )
Mocks – for candidates with external exams due

Extra-curricular activities within the Mathematics Department come in the shape of:

A weekly mathematics challenge.  Winners are presented with certificates in assembly each Friday.

Three external mathematics challenges run by The Mathematics Association and United Kingdom Mathematical Trust.

Upper and Lower School mathematics/chess clubs. The Department also organises an annual chess competition.

Trips to museums and theatre productions.

The rigour and breadth of the Department’s approach, ensure that pupils develop confidence and curiosity in the subject.
