High Ability

Children who show exceptional ability in individual subjects may follow more accelerated courses of study than their peers.   The school aims to keep children socially within their age group and to foster and encourage each child’s talents as they emerge.  Children are not forced ahead, but each child is encouraged to progress as quickly as he or she is able.  Sensitivity to each child’s potential is central to the school’s approach.  The comparatively large number of children in each year group, arranged in small classes, allows the school to use setting to provide differentiation appropriate to pupils’ abilities and educational needs.  The sensitivity of this approach helps to ensure that each child thrives academically.

Children who have been identified as gifted or highly able in a particular subject or skill will have the opportunity to extend their knowledge in a variety of ways.  Under the guidance of the High Ability Coordinator, a child will be screened and an individual education programme (IEP) will be drawn up to meet his or her needs.

Strategies currently in use might include the following: extension in class or homework, differentiation, flexible promotion to higher groups, acceleration and enrichment classes.  Many other strategies are available, details of which can be obtained through the SENCO within the Resource Unit.
