PE and Sports

Fixtures and team selection

With the increased length of extension clubs and a continuing focus during curriculum time on intra-school competition and gameplay, all our children from the youngest to the oldest will experience competition appropriate to their age and development. In order to ensure that the inter-school competition our children experience is appropriate we will ensure that teams representing Newton are grouped according to ability.  Sport for all will continue to be a very important aspect of the PE experience at Newton Prep and we will always endeavour to provide fixture opportunities for all children.

Intra and Inter school competition

From the spring term onwards there will be a number of changes to our fixtures calendar.  The focus in Years 3 and 4 will move away from inter-school competitive fixtures. When children do engage in competition with other schools it will take place during the second half of the term after adequate preparation during class time.  To foster a competitive spirit among this age group and enable all children to experience the many benefits of well managed competition we will be promoting and extending the intra school competitions which are held at school.

Increase in physical activity – Lower School

It is an aim of the PE department during this academic year to extend the opportunities for physical activity available to the children in Lower School. Apart from the introduction of lower school clubs (detailed above), classroom teachers have been encouraged to help increase the amount of time our children spend involved in physical activity.  This year, form teachers, with guidance from games staff, will be responsible for providing additional opportunities outside of games time. Equipment and facilities are going to be made available for all Lower School forms.  Reception classes are also hoping to have a further scheduled time outside using outdoor equipment bikes, trikes, bean bags etc. We are endeavouring to foster healthy attitudes towards physical activity and to help better prepare our students for upper school.

The department offers a variety of extra-curricular club activities: netball, football, cricket, rounders, hockey, tennis, basketball, gymnastics, fitness, and cross country throughout the year.  Extension clubs are offered to children who display particular strengths in our main sports.  Through these extension squads children are offered extra coaching to further extend and develop skills and game knowledge.

Fixtures are arranged with other prep schools and are an integral component of the school calendar.  Our inclusive policy regarding competitive sport at Newton means that all children will have the opportunity to represent the school and gain the benefits of healthy, well managed competition. Matches are organised for netball, football, cricket, rounder’s, and hockey and cross country teams. The gymnastics squad also performs in a large annual gymnastics display.
