What is the difference between a scholarship and a bursary?

Scholarships are awarded by the school on academic merit and are worth a fixed amount (currently £750 per academic year spread over three terms).  They are not means tested.  Scholars are publicly acknowledged as such.

Bursaries are available to children of scholarship ability.  Bursaries are paid by the Newton Scholarship Fund which is a registered charity.  They are means tested.  The award of a bursary is confidential.

I am struggling to pay my child’s fees -  can we apply for bursary funding?

Long term bursary funding is only available to children who have been assessed by the school to be of scholarship ability but there may be short term funding available in certain situations.  If you have a child at the school and have short term difficulties meeting the fees or your circumstances have changed for the worse you should contact Peter Farrelly, the school’s Finance and Administration Manager in the first instance and he will be able to provide guidance as to the help that may be available.

What sort of income levels might attract bursary funding?

There are not absolute figures that can be given.  When considering a request for bursary funding the Trustees consider the position holistically taking all relevant factors into account.  This will include but are not limited to the total household income from all sources but also expenses, the number of dependants and their ages, the value of any assets and the ability or otherwise of the parents or guardians to work.

What is the process for applying for bursary funded place for my child?

How long does bursary funding last for?

Once awarded this will continue until the end of year 6 or year 8 whichever leaving date is the sooner subject to the terms and conditions of such funding.  Each year the financial information form will need to be completed and the actual amount of bursary funding for each year will depend on your circumstances at that time.
