To register, parents must complete and return a registration form and enclose a cheque for £75 to cover administrative costs.
Admissions Policy
Newton Prep is a school which suits and meets the needs of bright, enthusiastic and inquisitive children. Newton Prep also makes provision for children who are gifted and talented. The School’s admissions policy and procedures are designed to help parents decide if Newton is the right school for their child as well as assisting the School in identifying children whom we believe will benefit from the style of education we offer.
Sibling Policy
From 2009/2010, siblings will be given priority when applying for places in Nursery. From 2009/2010, parents applying for places in Reception and above need to remember that, whilst every consideration will be given to brothers and sisters, siblings will not receive automatic priority over other children applying who have no previous connection to the School. The clarification of the School’s policy regarding siblings is designed to encourage younger brothers and sisters to join at Nursery. In years of typical demand for places, it is reasonable to expect that siblings joining the School later than Nursery are still likely to have an advantage over children with no previous connection.
Admission to the Nursery
48 places; two classes of 24
Children must have had their third birthday before 1st September in their year of entry. Parents may register their child at any time up to 31st December of the year before entry. In January and February of the year of entry, children being considered for Nursery places will be invited to attend a brief assessment at Newton Prep. This assessment is a gentle process conducted by teaching staff from within the Foundation Stage who will be looking to engage with the children to see how they relate to adults, their peers and the world around them.
Offers will be made before the end of the spring term in the year of entry. The School will operate a short waiting list. Children who do not gain places in the Nursery are welcome to reapply for places in Reception, the 4+ year. A child admitted to the Nursery may expect to transfer to Reception unless it becomes clear that such a course is not in the child’s best interests.
Admission to Reception
Approximately 30 additional places; four classes of about 20
Children must have had their fourth birthday before 1st September of their year of entry. Parents may register their child up to 1st July of the year before entry. In the autumn of the year before entry, children being considered for Reception places will be invited to attend a brief assessment at Newton Prep. This assessment is a gentle process conducted by teaching staff from within the Foundation Stage who will be looking to engage with the children to see how they relate to adults, their peers and the world around them. Given that the children are a little older than applicants for Nursery places, the process will be a little more searching, but just as gentle. Teaching staff will be looking for early indications of ability and potential in short meetings with individual children lasting about 15 minutes each.
Offers will be made before the end of the winter term in the year before entry. The School will operate a short waiting list. Children who do not gain places in Reception are welcome to reapply for places in later years according to availability. A child admitted to Reception may expect to transfer to Year 1 unless it becomes clear that such a course is not in the child’s best interests.
Admission to Year 3
The number of places available varies from year to year
Admission to Newton Prep at Year 3 is by competitive testing. Children must have had their seventh birthday by 1st September in their year of entry. Any child applying for entry in Year 3 will be considered for an ordinary, full-fee place, an honorary scholarship, or an honorary scholarship backed by a means-tested bursary.
In the spring term of Year 2, pupils presently at Newton, and external candidates in their age cohort, will undertake tests in mathematics, English and other diagnostic objective tests, together, on the same day. Children who are already at Newton Prep and external candidates who are most successful in these tests, whose achievements must be above an established standard, will be invited to interview shortly after the initial tests as part of the assessment process for the awarding of honorary scholarships and means-tested bursaries. Means-tested bursaries to supplement scholarships will be offered after the Trustees of the Newton Scholarship Fund have examined the financial statements of families seeking assistance. External candidates who do not reach scholarship standard may be offered ordinary, full-fee places.
Admission to Year 7
The number of places available varies from year to year
It is Newton Prep’s aim to recruit boys and girls into Year 7 who would benefit from having two more years at preparatory school before transferring to senior school at 13+ at the end of Year 8, probably by way of the Common Entrance Examination.
Admission to Newton Prep at Year 7 is by competitive testing. Children must have had their eleventh birthday by 1st September in their year of entry. Any child applying for entry in Year 7 will be considered for an ordinary, full-fee place, an honorary scholarship, or an honorary scholarship backed by a means-tested bursary.
In the autumn term of Year 6, pupils presently at Newton, and external candidates in their age cohort, will undertake tests in mathematics, English and other diagnostic objective tests, together, on the same day.
Admission in by-terms and in other years
The number of places available varies from year to year
Children applying for places in other years will be asked to undertake assessments at Newton Prep in English, mathematics and other objective tests which are age-appropriate. These children may also expect to be asked to spend a few days at Newton as a trial time, to see if they enjoy themselves and to confirm that they fit in.
