Our Facilities

Buildings and Facilities

The school has expanded above and around the original Victorian building. The modern extension comprises a further sixteen classrooms, a multispace area, two gyms, a dining room and spacious art studios.

The school premises are bright and spacious.  Newton Prep school has an all weather pitch, which is used for tennis, cricket, netball and football, as well as a school garden, all within the 1.5 acres that adjoin the school. Newton Prep has fully equipped science and ICT suites and a computerised library of over 15,000 books. Of all these additions, perhaps the jewel in the crown is the Auditorium, which seats nearly 300 and which was opened by Sir Peter Hall in November 2004.

The Auditorium
The auditorium is also used by visiting theatre companies such as the European Theatre Company.  In May 2006, the first in a series of lectures organised jointly by the school and the PTA under the title ‘The Newton Forum’, was given by the award-winning author, Nicky Singer. In June 2007, the Director of the Academy of Ancient Music, Director and Soloist Richard Egarr, performed alongside Newton Prep teachers, pupils and parents for the Newton Forum Summer Concert.

The Auditorium
The Library
The library lies at the heart of Newton Prep, both literally and figuratively. It is situated centrally on the first floor and is easily accessible to all pupils and staff. Because we are passionate about reading and learning, the library provides a welcoming, child-friendly environment which children enjoy visiting, either individually or in their forms.

Our Facilities

The library has an extensive collection of fiction and non-fiction (over 15,000 books) that is constantly being increased and updated. Lower School children visit the library once a week with their teachers to exchange books and listen to stories. Upper school children visit the library every day.

The School Garden
Our Facilities

In 2001 the school acquired some land adjacent to the railway tracks behind the school which had been used as a city farm. The Head of Science, Philip Middleton organised teams of parents and pupils to turn this land into a school garden, complete with pond and an assortment of fruit and other trees. One end of the garden is made up of a number of small plots which are cultivated by the children.  Some of their produce makes its way to the school kitchen – herbs and rhubarb, for instance. Pupils learn something about food production, even if on a small scale. The size and nature of this outdoor space makes it a valuable resource for learning.
